The City of Pomona’s Independent Redistricting Commission is looking to choose a final map in the coming months, with its fourth redistricting hearing on Wednesday, February 23 at 5 PM. At this hearing, the Commissioners will continue to discuss the submitted draft maps and how to draw the City’s future voting districts. As with last month’s hearing, residents will be able to analyze the draft maps alongside the Commission and offer input on those maps for consideration.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the hearing will be held virtually. Residents can attend and get involved by using the following link or call-in information:

“At the last meeting, the Commission reviewed resident-submitted maps, each of which reflected a unique aspect of our Pomona community,” said Commission Chair Aldo Yanez Ruiz. “The Commission looks forward to examining additional maps and continuing to hear where our fellow residents would like to see the City of Pomona’s district boundaries.”

Starting in October 2021, residents were able to explore online and paper mapping tools on its website at DrawPomona.org, and submit their draft maps through Friday, February 4. The City must redraw its district lines as a part of the decennial redistricting process that accounts for population changes reflected in the recent Census data.

Residents are encouraged to submit public comments for the upcoming redistricting hearing via Zoom or prior to the hearing via email at redistricting@pomonaca.gov. The Commission is looking to hear from residents about which maps they prefer, which maps they oppose, why they prefer certain district lines over others, and what Pomona communities they believe must be preserved or maintained within a single district.

In order to select a map well ahead of the April 17 map adoption deadline, the Commission anticipates identifying focus maps at the February 23 hearing and selecting its final map at the fifth hearing on March 23. The selected map will be posted on the Commission’s redistricting website at DrawPomona.org.
